Furniture spacing FAQs

How much clearance should I leave around furniture?

Most rooms feel comfortable with 30 in (76 cm) of circulation space. Tight layouts can work at 24 in (60 cm), while generous layouts feel best at 36 in (91 cm) or more.

Can I use this for any room shape?

The calculator assumes a rectangular room and rectangular furniture footprint. For L-shaped rooms, break the space into rectangles and test each zone.

Does this replace a full floor plan?

It is a fast check for fit and circulation. Use it early in planning, then confirm with a full plan or tape-out before purchasing furniture.

Can I use the results commercially?

Yes. You can use the spacing guidance in client work or listings. Adjust for local codes and accessibility needs.

How much space do you need between furniture?

Furniture spacing comes down to two things: comfortable circulation paths and usable zones around each piece. Most layout mistakes happen when people place furniture first and check clearances second.

Can a king bed fit in a 10x10 bedroom?

Technically yes, but barely. A standard king bed is 76x80 inches, which leaves less than 2 feet on each side in a 10x10 room. The recommended minimum side clearance is 24 inches for comfortable movement. A queen (60x80 inches) fits much more comfortably in that space, leaving usable floor on both sides.

How much space between sofa and coffee table?

The standard recommendation is 14 to 18 inches between the front of your sofa and the edge of the coffee table. Too close and it feels cramped; too far and you cannot reach drinks or a book without leaning forward. 16 inches works for most setups.

What is the minimum walkway width in a room?

Primary walkways (main paths through a room) need at least 36 inches of clear width. Secondary paths between furniture pieces can go down to 24 inches. In dining rooms, allow 36 to 48 inches behind chairs so people can push back and walk past comfortably.

How far should a TV be from the sofa?

A common guideline is 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal screen size. For a 55-inch TV, that puts the ideal viewing distance between 7 and 11 feet. Most living rooms work well with the sofa 8 to 10 feet from the screen, which also leaves enough space for a coffee table and circulation path in between.

How big should a dining table be for 6 people?

Allow 24 inches of table width per person. A 6-person rectangular table should be at least 36x72 inches. For the room itself, add 36 to 42 inches on all sides of the table so chairs can pull out and people can walk behind seated guests. That puts the minimum room size at roughly 10x12 feet for a 6-person dining setup.
