What size dining table do I need?

The right dining table size balances two things: enough table edge for everyone to eat in comfort, and enough room left over to pull out a chair and walk around the table. Plan on about 24 in of edge per person (22 in is the tight minimum), then check the table leaves at least 36 in of clearance to the nearest wall or furniture on every side. The calculator above does both for you, for rectangular, round, and square tables.

Dining table size by number of people

These rectangular dining table dimensions assume a table 36 to 42 in wide. A 60 inch (5 ft) table seats 6, while a 72 inch (6 ft) table seats 6 to 8 once you add a person at each end.

Table length In feet Seats
48 in4 ft4
60 in5 ft6
72 in6 ft6-8
96 in8 ft8-10
120 in10 ft10-12

Round dining table sizes (and how many they seat)

Round tables fit corners well and let everyone see each other. A 60 inch round dining table seats 6 to 8, and a 72 inch round dining table seats 8 to 10, so a round table is a space-friendly way to seat a crowd.

Square tables suit square rooms and smaller groups. Here is how many a square dining table seats by side length.

How much space do you need around a dining table?

Leave at least 36 in between every table edge and the nearest wall or furniture. That is the minimum to pull a chair out and sit down. For comfort, where people walk behind seated guests, aim for 42 to 48 in. To find the biggest table a room can take, subtract twice the clearance from each room dimension: a 12 by 14 ft room at 36 in clearance leaves room for a table up to about 96 by 72 in (8 by 6 ft). Enter your room size in the calculator to see this worked out for your space.
