Nail or hook height
69 in
Put your nail or hook at 69 in. That centers the art at 57 in, right around eye level.
- Top of frame: 69 in
- Bottom of frame: 45 in
- Center height: 57 in
How to mark it
Measure up from the floor to 69 in and make a light pencil mark. That is where the nail or hook goes. With no wire drop, the hook sits level with the top of the frame.

The simple answer to how high to hang art is to center it at eye level. In practice that means the middle of the frame sits about 57 inches off the floor, roughly eye level for most people. From there the only math is to add half the height of the frame to find the top, then subtract the wire drop to find the hook. The calculator above does all of that for your exact frame, so you get one number: how high to hang pictures, measured from the floor to the nail.
The 57 inch rule explained
The 57 inch rule is the standard galleries and museums use: hang art so its center is 57 inches from the floor. That height puts a single piece at a comfortable viewing level for the average person, which is why it answers the question of how high should pictures be hung in most rooms. Anywhere from 57 to 60 inches reads as eye level, so nudge the center height up a little for a taller household. For a gallery wall, treat the whole grouping as one piece and center the arrangement at 57 inches rather than each frame.
Hook height by art size
These are the hook heights for common frame sizes, with the art centered at 57 inches (the 57 inch rule) and no wire drop. Taller art needs a higher hook because the center stays fixed while the top of the frame rises.
| Art height | Hook height from floor |
|---|---|
| 16 in | 65 in |
| 20 in | 67 in |
| 24 in | 69 in |
| 30 in | 72 in |
| 36 in | 75 in |
| 48 in | 81 in |
How high to hang art over a sofa or console
Over furniture the 57 inch rule gives way to the piece below. Leave 4 to 8 inches between the top of the sofa back (or the console top) and the bottom of the frame, so the art relates to the furniture instead of floating off on its own. Six inches is a safe default. Switch the calculator to "Over furniture", enter the furniture height and the gap, and it returns the hook height and the resulting center so you can see how it compares with the 57 inch standard.
How to account for the wire or hardware drop
The hook does not go at the top of the frame, it goes where the hanging wire rests once it is loaded. Pull the wire taut toward the top of the frame, measure how far below the top edge it sits, and subtract that from the top-of-frame height. The calculator does this for you: enter the wire drop and the hook height drops by the same amount, so the art still lands at the center you picked. For sawtooth hangers or D-rings near the top, the drop is close to zero.
